was known as Rhus trilobata until sometime before Robert A. Vines book, Trees of Central Texas, came out around 1984. In the book, Vines describes the plant as Rhus aromatica var flabelliformis, referring to the fan-shaped leaves. He notes it was formerly referred to as R trilobata.
